چکیده

Word count: 149 words) 1. Fish-based indices of biotic integrity (IBI) have been developed for many lotic systems but remain scarce for lakes. The goal of the present study was to assess the responses of lentic fish assemblages to anthropogenic pressures when environmental variability was controlled for, and to compare them between French natural lakes and reservoirs. 2. Environmental features, catchment-scale anthropogenic descriptors and fish data were collected from 30 natural lakes and 59 reservoirs throughout France. 3. Functional fish metrics were regressed against both anthropogenic variables and the natural environmental conditions. Our results show that fish assemblages are appropriate ecological indicators for both natural and artificial lakes. They underline the necessity to control for the environment when 1 Corresponding authors’ present address: Cemagref. Controlling for natural variability in assessing the response of fish metrics to anthropogenic pressures for Northeast U.S.A. lakes

1. While fish-based Indices of Biotic Integrity have been developed for a wide array of lotic systems, equivalent tools have seldom been adapted to the monitoring and assessment of lakes. Major difficulties arise in such work: (i) collecting data that allow statistically robust analyses, (ii) choosing the relevant variables to describe the biotic, environmental and anthropogenic data sets and (...

Mercury and methylmercury concentrations in high altitude lakes and fish (Arctic charr) from the French Alps related to watershed characteristics.

Total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations were measured in the muscle of Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) and in the water column of 4 lakes that are located in the French Alps. Watershed characteristics were determined (6 coverage classes) for each lake in order to evaluate the influence of watershed composition on mercury and methylmercury concentrations in fish muscle and ...

A test of the variability and usefulness of SOLEC indicators in wetlands of Lakes Huron and Michigan

Introduction Development of indicators of " ecosystem health " for Great Lakes coastal wetlands was recognized as a major need at the State-of-the-Lakes Ecosystem Conferences (SOLEC) held in Buffalo, New York in 1998 and Hamilton, Ontario in 2000. Indicators listed by the wetlands indicators task force at these conferences included indices of biotic integrity (IBI) based on macroinvertebrates, ...

Temporal changes in the taxonomic and functional diversity of fish communities in shallow Chinese lakes: the effects of riverlake connections and aquaculture

1. Habitat modification by humans has severe impacts on the biotic and abiotic components of freshwater ecosystems. In China, shallow lakes in the Yangtze River basin are facing major habitat modification owing to the loss of their natural connections with rivers and the development of aquaculture. 2. In this study, temporal data (ranging from 1970 to 2010) from a set of lakes (n = 8) were used...

Survey design for lakes and reservoirs in the United States to assess contaminants in fish tissue.

The National Lake Fish Tissue Study (NLFTS) was the first survey of fish contamination in lakes and reservoirs in the 48 conterminous states based on a probability survey design. This study included the largest set (268) of persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic (PBT) chemicals ever studied in predator and bottom-dwelling fish species. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) implemente...
